Constructive Learning in Conjunctive Concept Characterization
Characterizing a set of instances is a fundamental step to acquire new concepts and has been actively investigated. The process may be very costly and the evaluation of its computational complexity is a topic which received recently a great deal of attention. On the other hand, also constructive learning in concept acquisition has been addressed and is considered relevant also to many aspects o...
متن کاملCompilation and Approximation of Conjunctive Queries by Concept Descriptions
In this paper, we characterize the logical correspondence between conjunctive queries and concept descriptions. We exhibit a necessary and sufficient condition for the compilation of a conjunctive query into an equivalent ALE concept description. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the approximation of conjunctive queries by maximally subsumed ALN concept descriptions.

MOTIVATION Cancer development is driven by the accumulation of advantageous mutations and subsequent clonal expansion of cells harbouring these mutations, but the order in which mutations occur remains poorly understood. Advances in genome sequencing and the soon-arriving flood of cancer genome data produced by large cancer sequencing consortia hold the promise to elucidate cancer progression. ...
متن کاملPredictive Hypothesis Identification
Canberra, ACT, 0200, Australia http://www.hutter1.net/ Summary • If prediction is the goal, but full Bayes not feasible, one should Identify (estimate/test/select) the Hypothesis (parameter/model/ interval) that Predicts best (PHI). •What best is can depend on benchmark (Loss, Lõss), distance function (d), how long we use the model (m), compared to how much data we have at hand (n). •The new pr...
متن کاملNotes on Sampling and Hypothesis Testing
In statistics, a population is an entire set of objects or units of observation of one sort or another, while a sample is a subset (usually a proper subset) of a population, selected for particular study (usually because it is impractical to study the whole population). The numerical characteristics of a population are called parameters. Generally the values of the parameters of interest remain...
